The Chaffey College men's soccer team opened Inland Empire Athletic Conference play in convincing fashion on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Cerro Coso College 14-1 on the road. The Panthers controlled the tempo from start to finish, scoring nine goals in the first half and adding five more after the break.
Chaffey wasted no time setting the tone, with Julio Martinez leading the early surge. Martinez struck first in the fourth minute off a setup from Adrien Vazquez, then assisted Kevin Velasquez just four minutes later to double the lead. Martinez continued to drive the offense, scoring twice more and adding two additional assists before the halftime, while Victor Ramos and Diego Garcia each contributed first-half goals to give Chaffey a commanding 9-1 advantage.
The Panthers maintained their momentum in the second half behind goals from Armando Diaz, Carlos Nunez, Luis DeAnda, and Jared Perez. DeAnda tallied two goals and an assist, while Alberto Gomez and Alesandros Sanchez each contributed assists to round out a complete team effort.
Goalkeepers Fernando Monteon and Christian Hernandez combined for four saves on five shots faced, leading the defensive efforts that kept Cerro Coso scoreless for the final 56 minutes of play.
With the win, Chaffey is now 1-0 in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference. The Panthers will return home on Friday, October 10, to host Victor Valley College. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
