Jacob Billings broke a 9th inning tie Friday with a leftfield homer over the fence giving the Panthers a 5-3 conference opening win.
Desert took a 3rd inning 3-0 lead and held Chaffey scoreless until a 6th inning homer by Matthew Chavez put the Panthers on the board 3-1. Damian Hernandez followed up with a sacrifice line drive to score Steven Mara. In the 7th, Noah Nichols stole home on an error by COD's 2nd baseman to tie it up 3-3. Billings' homer with two outs, had the team screaming and fans cheering.
Braden Hofmeyer pitched the starting six with Brock Mayer coming in to close out the game and earn the win (his first for the season).
The Panthers travel to SBVC Saturday.
