Chaffey College will play host to the 3C2A Men's Basketball Southern California First Round Regional Playoffs tonight at 7:00 p.m. against the Irvine Valley College Lasers.
The Lasers finished their regular season with a 17-13 overall record and a 9-8 conference record in the Orange Empire Conference, placing fourth behind Fullerton College, Santiago Canyon College, and Cypress College.
Irvine Valley College, in thirty-games this season, averaged 67.1 points, 34.9 rebounds, and 14.2 assists per game. They enter the playoffs playing solid basketball, winning five of their last six games. Their only loss in February was to Santa Ana College 67-59.
The Lasers are led by Matt Mowers, a 6'5 forward, and Allen Moser, a 6'1 freshman point guard. Mowers averaged 13.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, shooting 61.8% from the field. Moser contributes 9.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
Head coach Jeff Klein is familiar with Irvine Valley College, who plays in the Orange Empire Conference, which he considers the toughest basketball conference in the state. Klein will prepare the Panthers for a strong half-court man-to-man defense the Lasers will deploy. They also have a strong inside game that will be a focus of the Panther defense to neutralize.
In addition, Klein praises Head Coach Jason Garey for assembling a well-coached and disciplined team. Garey spent 14 years as an assistant coach under IVC's legendary men's coach Jerry Hernandez, during which the Lasers put together a 214-134 record.
