The Chaffey College Panthers women's basketball team is ready to tip off their 2024 season today, building on last year's 13-15 overall record and a third-place conference finish. The team has been preparing since summer classes began, and Head Coach Kendyl Rizea is proud of their progress. "Our group has fought hard every day, supporting each other through every challenge," says Rizea. "It's been a long journey, and we're entering the season stronger and closer than ever."
The Panthers open their season at the PCC Sisterhood of Champions Tournament in Pasadena, with their first game scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The program prioritized physical fitness and defensive strategies, as the foundation for the season ahead. Coach David Padilla, Chaffey's coordinator of the Athletic Performance Center, has been instrumental in getting the team into peak physical condition. The coaches have noticed a significant increase in intensity and competitiveness compared to previous years, a sentiment mentioned by outside observers.
"The energy and drive they bring to every practice is different,” states Rizea. "Our assistant coaches, Coach Buckner and Coach Jackson, have been instrumental in creating this positive culture and high standard. Their daily input and feedback have made a significant impact."
While physical preparation is key, the staff also prioritizes the players' overall well-being. They emphasize the importance of self-care, academic success, and maintaining a healthy balance throughout the long season, which extends until March.
"We've consistently emphasized long-term success, both on and off the court," Rizea explains. "By taking care of themselves physically and mentally, our athletes can excel in all aspects of their lives."
There is an excitement on the Rancho Cucomonga campus as the Panthers prepare for the season. While the team will miss Breonna Martinez, who is now competing at La Sierra University, the mix of returning players and new talent promises an exciting and competitive year.
The team returns six sophomores, including two players who received IEAC All-Conference honors last season: Ty Peters and Jada Cuellar. Peters and Cuellar will share point guard duties. Cuellar, from Rancho Cucamonga, appeared in 24 games last season, averaging 5.8 points, 6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. Fatimah Sani, a 6'3" center from the United Arab Emirates, returns after averaging 10.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Transfers Aleksia Gadea and Ariana Norton look to make an immediate impact. Coach Rizea is also excited about the versatility of the freshman class, with all first-year players capable of playing positions 2 through 5.
Ty Peters, Aleksia Gadea, Olivia Perlin, and Danielle Singley have been named team captains.
"Our players want to build a lasting legacy at Chaffey College," says Rizea. "They are competitive, they have come together, and if we compete the way I think we will, we should have an even better season."
