FOOTBALL PUTS IN THE WORK - OPENS SEASON WITH W
Chaffey Football, under the guidance of new head coach Darrin Chaverini, put in the work this summer and it showed on Saturday as the Panthers got their first win of the season with a decisive 34-9 win over LA Valley.
"I'm excited for our players and our staff," commented Chiaverini after the win. "To build a team in such a short time was very challenging. To see them play at a high level and compete for four quarters is what you want to see as a head coach!"
It took into the 2nd quarter for the Panther offense to cross into the endzone but once they did, they could not be stopped and suddenly the score was 21-0 at the half. Dereun Dortch led the Panthers at QB with 140 yards passing and 115 yards rushing resulting in two TDs for the game. Ian Eveleth's 10 yard pass started the scoring chain.
By the end of the 3rd, Valley managed 9 on the board but Chaffey's defense held the line and kept them to one fieldgoal and one TD (2-point conversion blocked). Syrano Ware had five solo tackles; Corey Davis four solos and 2 assists.
Dortch wasn't done in the 2nd, rushing 14 yards for a TD to close out the 3rd quarter of play. Jayson Cortes added a 14 yard run in the 4th to close out the game.
Anthony Hagan was 4:5 on extra points and averaged 48 yards on kickoffs.
The Panthers play their first home game of the season Saturday, welcoming LA Pierce to Grigsby Field at 6pm.
